2x72 belt grinder with variable speed 2HP motor.
This tool, with it's quick belt changes, swappable tool posts and tool rests in 3 different positions. Will be a work horse in the shop. I will rely heavily on it for lots of rough shaping as well as delicate finishing work. The flat platen attachment is the toolpost pictured below. It's used to create neat flat surfaces, such as flat bevels to create knife edges. It can also easily be swapped out and switched with various size wheels, when you want a hollow ground edge, or even to create round notches precisely and repeatedly.
draft 1, I made the main body transparent to make it easier to see how its built. I tried to use only 1/2 steel plate. That way I can get everything done with minimal setup fees at the laser cutting stage. You can also clearly see the face mounting motor with 56C frame.
I had to use 14 gauge wire for both 4 strand going between VFD (variable frequency drive) and motor, as well as the 110v 3 strand for main power. I ended up having to get rid of the insulation and use shrink tubing to finish neatly and get everything through the chassis cable lugs.Motor and controller, both operating perfectly and ready to go! Well, OK, that's the 1/2 HP my buddy lent me to test everything out.. the 2HP is on the way.
- next I need to put finishing touches on CAD drawing, export all the parts and get an estimate from the laser cutting company.
